Amanuel Tafesse may seem like your average 10th-grader. He likes his “teenage alone time” at home, plays basketball for his school team, and focuses on his studies. Amanuel transferred to Hope in 5th grade from a public school in Cottage Grove. Though unsure of what to expect at first, he immediately felt a sense of belonging when he toured the campus and learned about the school’s values. Now in his 6th year at Hope Christian High School, Amanuel credits the school for nurturing his spiritual growth through daily devotionals, scripture reading, chapel services, and an emphasis on Biblical principles across all subjects.

Outside the classroom, Hope’s retreats, service activities, and conventions allow students to put their faith into action. Amanuel fondly recalls a regional gathering where Hope students competed alongside youth groups from other Christian schools. “It was tiring but really fun,” he says.
Amanuel also developed close mentoring relationships with Hope Christian Academy’s faculty. “The teachers are so supportive. Those are lasting relationships,” he shares. His tight-knit community of like-minded peers has also played a pivotal role. “If you’re sick, people ask how you’re doing and go out of their way to help you out.”

As Band and Choir Director, I apply a creative, student-driven approach to music education. Rather than reproducing pre-made arrangements, the students and I collaborate to form ensembles and select pieces based on their talents and interests.
Together, we analyze compositions through a Gospel lens, developing their musical abilities while gaining a deeper appreciation for how this art form connects to our Christian faith.
